In a bizarre twist to this year’s convoluted election process, it seems that the only existing cassette tapes that recorded what was said at the last DASB Election Committee meeting held on May 17 were erased according to Ninad Bhave, DASB vice president of technology.
“I don’t care to make a judgement over when it was done or by whom,” said Bhave.
Bhave has access to equipment that can measure the pits and bumps created when a tape is magnetically changed in order to record or erase any length of it.
At the meeting on May 17 the members of the election committee, Sharla Stevens, Lydia Lascalleet and Grace Bello dismissed all allegations of election code infractions. No minutes of the meeting were written. Instead, Dennis Shannakian, Student Activities administrative assistant, recorded the meeting.
According to Shannakian, he tested the equipment before and after the meeting and it seemed to be working. But, when the tapes were reviewed days later, they were blank.
Bhave has since tested one tape and found that something was recorded on it and subsequently erased.
Given time and enough resources, Bhave said, he could probably reconstruct part of what was recorded, but because most of the recorded material would be, “a bunch of garbage,” Bhave does not plan on reconstructing the three tapes.
