Sweatshop fashion show hopes to educate students on issues

Students from the Associated Student Body Senate and the Women’s Club will be hosting a sweatshop fashion show, “Don’t Sweat It,” on Tuesday May 30 from 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. in front of the school library.

The event will include: food, a DJ, information tables from clubs on campus and the San Francisco based non-profit Global Exchange, a fashion show with commentary and information about sweatshop conditions in relation to different name brand companies, and a guest speaker.

Carmencity “Chie” Abad, a former garment worker on the Pacific island of Saipan, in the U.S. Commonwealth of the Marianas, will discuss the “horrible working conditions” she endurd in Saipan while making clothes for the Gap.

In her struggle to unionize workers, she was forced to leave the island and is now working to educate Americans about inhumane factory conditions occurring on U.S. soil.

The event is meant to be fun and informative. The goal is to influence the district in adopting a policy of not purchasing any clothes bearing the De Anza logo made with sweatshop labor.
