Dons softball season halted by West Valley

After making it to the championship game, the De Anza Dons softball team had their season ended by cross-town rival, West Valley, a 3-0 loss.

The rainy weekend manipulated the double-elimination tournament.

Starting the tournament off against the number 4 seed, Sierra, the Dons knew they were in for a tough weekend.

In their first game of the tournament, the Dons were forced into extra-innings. After a defensive game, with very few hits, the Dons suffered a brutal loss, 1-0.

The loss set the Dons back, but they came back later in the weekend.

“We played good, but Sierra’s defense played equally as good, but we had a chance at winning that game,” said Coach Dennis Pennell.

Sunday morning the Dons were to play number 6 seed Fresno. After six innings of play, soggy weather delayed the game until Monday when the fields dried.

The Dons finished the game strong, defeating Fresno 3-1.

Shortly after defeating Fresno, the Dons again played Sierra. This time the Dons captured a close victory over Sierra 2-1, 14 innings and four hours later.

“We had stellar defense in the game, Megan pitched 16 straight innings Monday, it was a good win.”

Ten minutes after pushing the Sierra team out of the playoffs, the Dons suffered an excruciating loss to divisional foe West Valley. The 3-0 loss ended the Dons’ season, but the team was happy with their season.

“It just shows you how tough our division was this year and how good we were. We played an excellent season and we all had fun,” said Pennell.
