This year the DASB decided on funding the Campus Center nearly $75,000 requested by the administration. Student funds have helped finance the Campus Center throughout its existence. At the same time, the Campus Center is a profitable entity, generating thousands of dollars, but the money the center generates is controlled by the administration.
The students should not be fleeced. The profits of the Campus Center belong to the student body.
As another source of revenue, district administrators brought the Smartcard and corporations like Coca-Cola on to campus on the promise that they would bring revenue to the district. The administration requested that students spend $16,000 to pay for this. The final amount of student money allocated to the smartcard was $4,000. La Voz applauds the Senate on spending moderately on the smartcard.
The “trickle down” theory that student money spent on disctrict projects like the Cmpus Center and the smartcard will eventually benefit the student body is a poor choice when there are plenty of programs that could benefit directly and immediately from funding.
