Rock and roll is here to stay

This past Saturday, a group of people came together in the California History Center to remember an important piece of American history — the 1960’s. The Center is hosting an exhibition from March 1 through June 16 celebrating the rock and roll revolution that took place in Northern California between 1963 and 1973.

A few people in attendance dressed the part in loose fitting tie dyed clothing. The mood of the exhibit was further set by lava lamps, incense, candles, psychedelic posters, groovy music, song lyric displays, news clippings, quotes, and a timeline documenting important events from 1963 to 1973.

These include the rise of the careers of such bands as The Grateful Dead and the Beatles.

There’s a space reserved on the wall for brightly colored post-it notes on which viewers of the exhibitioncould express their thoughts. “We believed we could change the world” was one sentiment. In response to this, another visiter wrote, “If you look closely, we did (not as much as we wanted though.)”

A panel, which included Gene Anthony, Hillel Resner, Country Joe McDonald, and Chet Helmes discussed the music, dance, fashion, and overall spirit of empowerment of the sixties.

“In the sixties you thought anything was possible.” said Helmes, manager of the Avalon Ballroom. He went on to say that “The sixties were the best thing to happen to America.”
