“Pitch Perfect 2” brings the Bellas back for an encore performance

Fernanda Pineda

The Barden Bellas are back, this time to vindicate themselves and give one last performance before each take their path in life. Although a cheesy chick flick, “Pitch Perfect 2” will please viewers.

The story begins with the Bellas performing at the Lincoln Center in New York in front of a crowd that includes the president of the United States with a risky act that ends in humiliation for the group.

As a result, they’re publicly shamed and suspended from performing in the Aca-Circuit.

In order to redeem their status and selves, they enter an international competition of acapella. The only obstacles in their path are the Das Sound Machine, a superlative, a cocky German group, and that no American team has ever won an international competition. With the help of freshmen Emily Junk (Hailee Steinfield), the Bellas seek to reconquer the acapella world.

Anna Kendrick effectively portrays Senior Bella and protagonist, Beca Mitchell. Beca interns in a record label and must impress her smug boss (Keegan-Michael Kay), in order to have a future in the industry.

The witty Fat Amy is phenomenally played by Rebel Wilson, who continues to make the audience laugh with her bubbly personality and unique relationship with Bumper Allen (Adam DeVine).

New to the movie Emily Junk-Harden is excellently depicted by Hailee Steinfeld. Her innocent personality and desire to become a Bella get her in trouble, making her easy to sympathize with.

Although Lilly Onakurama (Hana Mae Lee) serves her purpose as the eccentric and quiet girl, her character is overly awkward at times and tries too hard to be funny.

Working together and keeping their identity to achieve their goals are the themes of “Pitch Perfect 2.”

After their mortifying experience, the Bellas seek redemption and soon discover their main competition, Das Sound Machine.

Initially intimidated due to their elaborate choreography, physique and crowd pleasing ability; they decide to imitate them in order to triumph.

Exceptional singing, catchy songs and Fat Amy keep the audience entertained, along with guest appearances that range from Snoop Dogg, players from the Green Bay Packers and prominent media personalities.

The humor is cheesy and classic, however the similar plot as the first “Pitch Perfect” can bore the viewer.

Overall “Pitch Perfect 2” is for viewers who enjoy the chick flick genre. It has all the components; generic humor, effective acting, sisterhood theme and brief romance.
