“DA Voices” is a recurring feature used to spotlight De Anza College’s diverse community voices. We ask the same question to different people and arrange their quotes so that readers can see varying points of view. This time, La Voz reporter Lina Borges asked, “What communities are you a part of?”

Aleeana Salazar, 18, psychology major, said her Mexican heritage wasn’t her only source of community.
“Music is a big thing for me.” she said. “I’m really into rock music.”

Spencer Inouye, 19, environmental science major, said his heritage and college are a source of pride.
“I’m a student at De Anza, and I am very proud to be a part of this community,” Inouye said. “I’m Asian, so I am part of the Asian community as well. I like cars, but I wouldn’t say I’m in that community. I admire it from a distance.”

Reese Huppler, 19, computer science major, said that he is part of the Pride learning community.
“I like spending time in the Pride Center outside of class,” Huppler said.
He said he believes it is important for queer voices to be heard.

Toby Das, 20, psychology major, shared that he is also part of the Pride Learning Community.
“It would be cool to have one (community) that is neurodivergent-specific,” Das said. “We do have a lot of people who are neurodivergent.”

Kapil Gurung, 20, data science major from Nepal, said he enjoys going to school at De Anza.
“I’m part of the computer science community,” Gurung said.

Jerome Cabrera, 19, nursing major said he is proud of his Filipino heritage.
“I used to do a lot of fundraising and events where we would raise money and send it back to the Philippines,” Cabrera said. “Another community that I would say I am a big part of would be my dance community too, I used to do a lot of dancing.”

Naw Lah Say Wah, 26, nursing major said she is happy about being part of the De Anza student community.
“I love the peaceful environment here, everything is so chill,” Wah said.
Wah said she is also part of the Asian and Christian communities. She gets involved in her church by going every week where they sing together.
