CELEBRATION – De Anza’s volleyball team celebrates a point they earned during Friday’s match against Hartnell College held at De Anza Oct. 5.

The De Anza College women’s volleyball won three sets in a row against Hartnell College, Oct. 5. Hartnell proved to be no match for De Anza’s agressive defense and strong teamwork.
De Anza scored three points within the first minute of the game. Alyssa Tarrant, the team captain and setter, set up plays for her teammates to get the ball over the net.
“The best play was when Kja (Katherine Ja, middle blocker) killed it after a really good save,” Tarrant said. Tarrant wants three game sets to be the norm for the Dons, with the end goal of making the playoffs at the end of the regular season.
In the second set, right-side hitter Rachel Tang scored five points in a row with her serve.
Mishel Deemer is the middle blocker and played defense at the net. She feels her height is key to getting the desired outcomes in the match.
“It feels really good. I use my height as an advantage to get really good blocks and hits in,” Deemer said.
Jackie Guevara, a De Anza fan in the stands, said the team is looking great and are working well together.
“The girls are playing so well together,” she said. “Everyone of them is getting in and are not slacking off. They are doing a great job and playing good defense. Their skills are getting better during every game.”
De Anza tied three times in the final set. At 17-17 Tarrant set up a pass for outside hitter Christina Ja and they broke the tie. Minutes later, outside hitter Tylyn Santos hit the ground to get the ball back up and over. De Anza ended the game, and set, with a close score of 25-23.
