De Anza students, the college is adding classes in the next two quarters to give you more choices in the catalog, easing up the pressure of registering for class and reducing the risk of being waitlisted for units you need.

You might have noticed some of your professors speaking about the issue in class. The school needs to boost enrollment so that newly added sections/courses will be funded in the future, according to Political Science chair Bob Stockwell. What that means, Stockwell said, is that “the school is growing. We need more students to fill the seats.”

Stockwell said that students will see the difference when they register for Winter and “Spring will be even more robust.”

Students should check the course catalog for exact courses/sections, but many of the core general education classes will be reinforced to correspond to their popularity with students. For example, Dean Carolyn Wilkins-Greene of Social Science and Humanities said that under her purview, “every single department, for Winter and Spring, will be adding three (sections).”

Dean Wilkins-Greene said those departments include Anthropology, Economics, Geography, History, Humanities, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology. Dean Wilkins-Greene also said that three career and technical education programs will also have three new sections, including, Administration of Justice, Child Development and Education, and Paralegal Studies.

Dean Wilkins-Greene hopes that students will be encouraged to “take courses you haven’t taken before, we invite you to tell others too.”

Stockwell echoes her sentiment, “Students can help the school by asking themselves, ‘How do we communicate the school is growing? What more can we do?'”

De Anza Marketing Director Marisa Spatafore also provided more information on courses that are adding sections in the next two quarters for Physical Science Math and Engineering (PSME). Spatafore said that 17 math sections have been added, at least one for every course.

“In that division, two (Oceanography 20) sections have been added, as has a Physics 4C section.” Spatafore said, “The addition of even more sections is also possible in order to meet student demand.”
