Election week showcases student trustees alongside main coalitions

The De Anza Associated Student Body senate held their campaign week May 2 to May 5, where candidates promoted their causes, values and platforms.

Posters and fliers covered the walls of the campus, particularly in the main quad. The two coalitions, Students Promoting Equality, Action and Knowledge, led by presidential candidate Arvind Ravichandran and Progress and Empowerment Through Activism and Community Engagement, led by Nevin Sarina, began posting materials May 2 at 12:01 a.m.

In addition to 30 senatorial seats and the president and executive vice president positions, one student trustee will be elected. The candidates are Emily Kinner and Mayleo Saito.

One student trustee represents the student body of De Anza College. The trustee attends district board meetings and serves as a representative voice of the students while the trustees discuss policy.According to Kinner, her campaign will focus on the senate’s recently passed EcoPass policy, which will allow students access to public transportation at a severely reduced rate.

“The student trustee can participate in the discussion with the Foothill De Anza district board of trustees,” Kinner said. “My task, as student trustee, would be making sure that students know that they have access and are entitled to a pass.

Saito said that as student trustee, she will be comfortable in the administrative environment, due to her work in the past with adults, representing people she cares about and representing a college she cares about a lot.

“I’m really [really] passionate about education,” she said. “I’m not good at saying no to people so sometimes I get overwhelmed by the things I take on. At the same time, I make sure that I finish everything. I’m thorough and I don’t like letting people down.”

As part of campaigning, members of the SPEAK and PEACE coalitions, as well as Kinner and Saito, have been giving classroom presentations with brief overviews of what they promise to bring to the campus if elected.
