Valentine’s Day: Ways to celebrate if you are single

February 1, 2016

Each year, Feb. 14 is reserved as a day of love, affection and grand gestures. Each year I find myself asking why, why, why?

Valentine’s Day is overwhelmingly overrated. Don’t get me wrong, I love holidays. Give me an excuse to do something festive and I’m there with a party dress on and a plate full of cookies. Valentine’s Day, though, is a different kind of holiday. I don’t think we should mark our calendars for it.

If you’re in a relationship, I have a question for you: do you really wait for this one day each year to show your special someone just how much you think they deserve chocolate, roses, and a planned in advance dinner? I mean, really? If you are in love with someone, you shouldn’t confine your schedule of affectionate expression. I dare you to show love to your partner on a random day in August, just because.

If you’re not in what is typically considered a relationship this Valentine’s Day, then I have some fantastic news for you.
First of all, you are loved and you don’t need anyone else to prove that to you but yourself. How can you let someone else love you anyways if you don’t already love yourself?

Second, I will offer some suggestions to protect you from this widespread epidemic of “singles awareness day.” Follow these simple guidelines and your single Feb. 14 can turn out to be the best day of the year.

This year Valentines Day is on a Sunday. If you’re like me, Sundays are devoted to relaxation and pampering. So if you’re single this Valentine’s Day and don’t have to fulfill social constructs, treat yourself. There’s nothing wrong with a little self love.
Take yourself out for a nice morning hike or that yoga class you’ve been meaning to try. Afterwards grab brunch or hit up a farmers market. Buy some flowers and indulge in fresh fruit. Don’t be shy to do it alone.

If you really want to be pampered, schedule yourself a massage. It’s the ultimate form of relaxation that will leave you feeling totally at peace.

You might want to stay at home all day to avoid the Valentine’s Day hustle and bustle. In that case, keep your pajamas on and get ready to lounge.
Check out Pinterest for breakfast inspiration and surprise your family with breakfast in bed. If Valentine’s Day is about spreading love, then what is the better way to partake than treating your family with a nice meal. Food is the best way to show others just how much you care about them.

Ultimately, don’t let being single get you down because it absolutely shouldn’t! There’s so much that you can find to do. Don’t let the meaning maker in you turn February 14 into a dreaded day. It’s just another day. A day full of love, fun and lots of chocolate.

Oh, did I forget to mention chocolate? You’re going to need that. Single or not. Don’t forget the chocolate.
