    Historic cottage collapses

“What happened to this?” a student asked when she noticed the collapsed roof of the East Cottage at the construction site next to the California History Center.

On June 2, at around 7 a.m., the roof of the East Cottage collapsed while under construction. No workers were injured.

The Foothill-De Anza Police Department was notified of the situation at 7:15 a.m. Officer Frank Rocha was the first on the scene, followed by Sgt. Stan Cross and Police Chief Ron Levine.

Police officers are posted in the area to keep people from trespassing into the fenced area, while also watching out for the possibility of a fire.

The administration will be handling investigation into the cause of the collapse and De Anza community members say they hope the cottage will be rebuilt.

“It’s really sad for me, because I was looking forward for the building to be saved,” said Tom Izu, director of the California History Center. “I’m just concerned about the safety of the workers and I’m glad no one was hurt.”

The East Cottage was part of the Baldwin Estate designed by Willis Polk in 1890 to house guests and servants. There was also a West Cottage that was torn down during the relocation of the campus perimeter road.
