    As the World Burns

    A low quality academic joke

The new quarter has started and already students feel the effects of the budget cuts with crowded classrooms, limited class options and high tuition fees. Topped off with an increase in enrollment, now a community college is just as hectic as London’s Heathrow Airport.

Hopefully everyone noticed all the efforts of activists at the UCs and CSUs who were willing to sacrifice their academic future just so students are not forced to take on the burden of unnecessary cuts and tuition hikes. If you see one of these heroes, thank them for all they did.

Now that we will be forced to pay extra for our education, students should expect something of high quality in return. Instead, it’s going to be like high school all over again with classrooms violating most fire hazards laws while the administration is desperately trying to keep underpaid professors. Yet these cuts are only a tip of the iceberg.

This kind of degradation of the education system has become an infective plague in many states. As a result, Wal-Mart along with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have proposed new programs to save our education. It should be noted that when a corporation that has been blamed for many social ills is concerned about our education, then there is something obviously wrong.

The Foothill-De Anza District administration could take some action to survive the state cuts without sacrificing quality. The obvious would be stopping all construction projects while setting up a student organization that could be responsible for campus beautification.

Next, get rid of every instructor who is incompetent or whose teaching philosophy is outdated. What is the point of wasting money on useless instructors who are misinforming students or failing to uphold their civic obligation? At any other job, if someone is incompetent or useless, they get fired. It’s the 21st century; if an instructor refuses to include modern philosophy or technology in the lesson plan, then they are preparing students for a future as cavemen.

Or the administration could invite Gordon Ramsey so he may scream at the faculty for a week until they change their methods and then decide that what the campus needs to offer is a high quality education at a reasonable cost.

With the light humor aside, the ongoing budget cuts are an important issue that is not just having an impact on your wallet.

Students are being forced to receive a primitive education that will not prepare them for anything. If our education is going to breed a generation of morons, then all a well educated person could do is sit back and watch the world burn.
