    As The World Burns

Finding a scapegoat over taking responsibilities

Next to baseball, not learning from a mistake has to be one of the great American Past times. Even when a tragedy blows up in our face (literally) on a national level, we go back to a nonchalant attitude by week four.

Take the massacre at Fort Hood as the latest example. Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan went on a shooting spree that killed 13 and injured 30 people. His motive was simple: he went postal. Yes, there were many signs of his erratic behavior that were ignored. And now 12 patriots and one civilian are dead because of incompetence.

Not everyone is accepting “going postal” motive. A day after the massacre, the Brady Campaign released a press statement blaming the state’s laws and calling for more gun control. Also, Sen. Joe Liebermann (D-Con) has blamed the attack on Muslims and now is calling for a congressional hearing to determine if Hasan’s faith was a motive for the attack.

Traitor Joe has gone off and done something that Republicans, neo-conservatives and right-wing extremists would normally do: attempting to provoke inner community violence by blaming the horror on an ethnic/religious group. To a point it does make sense since Hasan is too old for the “he plays video games and listens to hip-hop” excuse.

Except for Traitor Joe’s “blame the Muslims” remark, such reaction to a massacre is all too normal. A person is showing signs of a mental breakdown but their employer/school ignoring it until they go on a killing spree. When the crime is done people are just playing the blame game.

Parents are blaming the school for its poor security, Traitor Joe along with Fred Thompson are blaming Grand Theft Auto or Postal, moralists are blaming indecency in the media, and gun control advocates are blaming guns. Soon, concerts are canceled in the area, Thompson is trying to file a frivolous lawsuit, schools take their “zero tolerance policy” for a week then everything is back to normal. All this could have been avoided had we all learned the lessons from Columbian and not found someone to blame.

Did the nation learn anything from the 9/11 attack? Are the airports safer now with more individuals with (in the words of George Carlin) “a double digit IQ and a double digit pay check?”

It might feel easier to just ignore the mistakes of the past, but how long could we keep up this trend before someone goes postal at a chemical factory? If nothing is learned form Fort Hood, so when the next massacre happens then just enjoy the fun on TV as we watch the world burn.
