    Not this again

The day after we remembered those who gave their lives to defend this country, the California Supreme Court ruled to uphold the passing of Proposition 8.

Bay Area comic Jim Panetta best described the irony when he said, “Today we remember all of the gay soldiers who gave their lives to protect everyone else’s freedom but their own.”

While homophobic fascists celebrate, those who believe in the principles of democracy refuse to end this struggle until the legal recognition of equal rights for everyone has been achieved.

The battle for equality has heated up to the point where lawyers Theodore Olson and David Boies, rivals from Bush v. Gore, have united to fight the legality of Prop 8. The duo filed a lawsuit in the federal court on behalf of two gay couples.

Those who refuse to accept defeat will be up in arms, ready to defeat this decision, while supporters will bore us with the same spiel: “Being gay is a sin, because that’s what my priest/Grand Wizard/Ayatollah/L. Ron Hubbard said.”

Another tactic that could be used is a little civil disobedience. It’s simple. Regardless of the law, I recommend that gay couples still marry in this state. Show the tyrants and those quisling cowards that one little law will not shatter the love that two people have.

Despite the crying of those who voted yes, Proposition 8 is an insult to our principles and it must be overturned.

Some may feel that such an act goes against the voice of 7,001,084, and the principles of our democracy. Sadly 7,001,084 morons can’t tell the difference between a democracy and a direct democracy, let alone understand what a democracy truly is. It’s not just about the will of the people, but also the guarantee of basic civil rights to all citizens. And no domestic partnership is the same as marriage.

Supporters of Proposition 8 have argued that homosexuality is a threat to traditional standards of family values. However, if one were to actually examine their stance, then one can see the hypocrisy in their false vision.

How is denying people the ability to marry so they may establish families supposed to preserve family values? Or encouraging families to disown, alienate or beat kin because of their sexual orientation? Or, put simply, how does destroying families exactly fall under preserving them?

Finally, there are those who have been nothing but a threat to our democracy with their goals of trying to merge religion with government.

Let me make this clear: this is a democracy, not a theocracy. If people here really want to merge religion with government, then just move to the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Enjoy the religious freedom for minorities that is promised by decree of Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

If we have a democracy where the majority is allowed to suppress the rights of certain groups, then what’s stopping the mob from hijacking our democracy and turning it into a fascist state? What will stop Maggie Gallagher from proposing a Section 28 or David Duke and Fred Phelps jointly proposing the reintroduction of Jim Crow laws?

Maybe we should just let the tyrants take over. Then those who believe in democracy can take refugee in Europe and relax on the beaches of Spain, enjoying a nice glass of wine as we watch the world burn.
