    Limbaugh no Buckley

February 27, 2008 could be marked as the day that the conservatism movement in America was finally defeated when its leading intellectual, William F. Buckley Jr., passed away.

Regardless of where a person’s belief stood on the political spectrum, one always had a great deal of admiration and respect for Buckley. Be it in his writing or his witty personality on “Firing Line.”

The loss of Buckley was the last major blow to bringing about the downfall of the conservative movement. Now the ideology is in a corner were the politicians are stubborn on the regenerating the economy while leading intellectuals and pundits are making fools out of themselves.

To even consider a clown like Rush Limbaugh as a possible successor to Buckley has to be one horrible joke. Buckley is probably now rolling over in his grave knowing that his successor is a backwashed jester.

Yet you’re probably wondering why someone who has shown liberal values, celebrated Barack Obama’s victory in the 2008 Election, made wisecracks about Ronald Regan’s Alzheimer and suggested to have Florida banned from the presidential election would want to advocate saving conservatism.

Starting with the Regan era and ending with eight years of George W. Bush’s laughable tyranny, one might wonder why a scalded conservative ideology is unacceptable?

It was because when conservatism was able to prosper because of how neo-conservative think tanks were successful in demonizing liberalism and out casting any political or intellectual figure that shared these values.

Before the Regan era, liberals were successful in depicting conservatives as supporters of southern Jim Crow while portraying Barry Goldwater as a heartless warmonger. Hence for a while, liberalism was dominating ideology until Lyndon B. Johnson began to escalate American involvement in the Vietnam War.

The point is that one ideology has to serve as a check on the dominating belief to protect society from flawed political policies. The history of the Cold War has shown how the ugly internal battle between two different ideas has leaded us to a world of anarchy.

However the conservative movement must take its time to reflect upon itself so it may abandon stances or beliefs that were either unethical, immoral or simply ignorant. It also needs to focus on a bipartisanship with liberalism to help rebuild the nation.

Obama along with the Democrat controlled Congress need some time to clean up Bush’s mess and restore America’s position as a city upon a hill. Republican support is not necessary in making the needed progress but it’s vital to show that the nation is united in its darkest time.

Conservatives need to stop trying to hold on to whatever small power they have and try to cooperate with the new president. Rather then looking to Limbaugh as a voice the conservatives should look to Christopher T. Buckley as a voice and follow his example of wanting political unity.

It is when the national pride is restored, that conservatism can act as the needed check on liberalism.

However if we decide to repeat the same mistake for the third time then we may just abandon all hope of a better future and instead just sit back and watch the world burn.
