Let’s face it, the 49ers of the past are no more and the history between fans of the past and Candlestick are also long gone in the bay area fog. Candlestick, like the 49ers, used to be a good thing. Now they are both deteriorating under the York family and there is nothing left of the five-time Super Bowl winning San Francisco 49ers. It doesn’t matter if they keep the name even if they actually do move to Santa Clara, the name doesn’t even deserve to be used by this new era. So if the 49ers want to move to Santa Clara and the tax payers of Santa Clara approve so be it. This move might be the only positive thing about the 49ers if they somewhere else. For those who don’t know about the new 49ers stadium proposal to move to Santa Clara, the Owners of the 49ers, John and Denise Debartolo York, want to revitalize the franchise by building a new stadium. Their current location, Candlestick, is not urban and thriving enough to support the cost of renovation and they can’t get any luck getting Hunter’s Point Ship Yard to pass environmentally. So the Yorks have decided to focus their attention towards 49ers Headquarters in Santa Clara right next to Great America Theme Park. It’s been a tug of war between the franchise and the city of Santa Clara but at of July of 2008, they have both agreed to extend negotiations and plans for the new stadium. Ultimately it goes down to a vote in November from the residents of Santa Clara to approve the building of the stadium or not. Of course the obvious cons are out when talking about a new football stadium in south bay suburbia. More pollution will be put out over our suburban south bay cities because of the inhabitance of the stadium. Another Santa Clara resident doesn’t watch football so the traffic on Sundays wouldn’t be pleasant. For another resident, she wasn’t too fond of the lights that will be shinning in her bedroom at night either. The last obvious reason for the 49ers to stay in San Francisco is the history. History is something no one can buy and no matter how much money a person tries to spend, it won’t happen. With that being said, go ahead and move the franchise. There’s nothing left of the golden era anymore. I, a 20-year 49ers faithful myself, am okay with it. I actually think there would be more positives. With the economy the way it is, there is no telling when it will get better. The building of the project will immediately put jobs out there for the people not to mention when the building is done and they will need workers to maintain the place. Another pro for a new stadium is that being that it is a new stadium the NFL will put it in serious contention for a reservation for a future Super Bowl. Super Bowls actually turn whatever destination they are at into a week long attraction that fans from all over stay at. This will also give the economy a boost. Being a 49er fan, I wouldn’t mind them in my backyard either. I am over with the past, and ready to deal with the new. I know that the margin of 49ers ever coming to glory they did before is slim however moving here might be a good change of scenery. The players might finally feel they don’t have to live up to a city, or even a region of expectations and what used to be. No team will ever live up to that after Bill Walsh was drove out in 2000. To have the Yorks still in front office, I rather have them somewhere else. They need to take themselves out of San Francisco and finally spend some money on the franchise and their players. It’s a new era now, and we all must get over the golden years. It’s time to start new and the team to find a new identity and maybe this new stadium can help.
