    Prius killing the Blind

If a tough car is involved in an accident with a feeble car, is it the fault of the driver for not paying attention to the surroundings or is it the fault of the car itself for being too tough. This is a similar dilemma that has fallen upon the Toyota Prius for its quit engine which now posses a risk for blind pedestrian.

With many hybrid cars and their quite engines on the road, their have been growing concerns about the safety of blind pedestrians who rely on sound to get by. A legislation that would set a minimum sound level for vehicles is to be heard by Congress. What next legislation that would make a car body flimsy?

Concerns over the noise level of Hybrids have grown after 15 blind pedestrians were killed in a motor accident. Such an issue is more note worthy then 400,000 killed in Darfur or 80 people killed during the protesters in Tibet against Chinese oppression.

Is it really necessary to pass laws to set a minimum sound level for vehicles as a substitute for the driver’s requirement to be more aware of who or what is on the road? If the law passes will it be ok to drive blindfolded since cars will have loud engines for people to hear.

Any one who has read the California Drivers License Handbook should know that a motorist need to be aware of their surroundings and that pedestrians always have the right of way at cross walks.

A motorist needs to be responsible when driving in areas where there are a large number of peoples. It’s not like Grand Theft Auto III were there is a big cash reward for running over a lot pedestrians, no matter how tempting it is.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, pedestrian account for 11% of motor vehicle fatalities. The most common factor of these deaths are the result of negligence on the motorist part.

It is the driver’s responsibility to be aware of their surroundings and fully alert if pedestrians are crossing the road. They can’t be expected to rely on their engine sound to warn pedestrians of their presence.

The engine of the Hybrid is only quit if the car is being driven at a slow speed, which is also safe in suburban neighborhoods where children are presence. Traveling at such a speed should give the driver good enough opportunity to be more aware and plenty of time to stop if needed. Unless the government changes the laws to raise the minimum speed in a neighborhood just so the engines could be headed.

Will such a law make the roads safer for pedestrians or will it make drivers rely on their engine noise to warn pedestrians rather then be aware of their surroundings. Will other laws be passed were gun manufactures have to design bullets that don’t kill just to lower the number of deaths by fire arms or lower alcohol content in booze to help drop deaths by alcohol poisoning?
