“Some people I think are pretty conscious, but it takes only one person to make a trash pile.” says part time staff member, Department. Students need to realize that when ever they place a bottle or a tossed piece of paper, down on the floor, they should instead throw it in the trash. When they are done with chewing their wad of gum, they should wrap it up in paper, and toss it in the trash can.The De Anza custodians have a job to do. They work hard to make our school look clean and welcoming each day when we enter a room, or on campus. “We see a lot of coffee cups, plastic bottles, and papers in classrooms. We make sure it looks nice and presentable for the next day.” states Manuel Mendoza, the Custodial Manager for De Anza. But as the hours go by, from morning to night, the class rooms get littered with bottles, cups, papers, and pre-chewed gum. There are even cases where gum is not only pushed up underneath the tables, they are stuck onto carpets. That’s just gross. “There is no reason for people to spit chewing gum on the carpet.” Says executive director for the Kirsch Center, Pat Cornely. These pieces of garbage are time consuming for the custodians. “Most of heavy cleaning we do is in the grave yard shift, from 10:00pm-6:00am and on Fridays between 4:00pm-12:00am” states Manuel Mendoza, “During breaks, especially summer breaks, we shampoo the carpet, wash windows, wash floors, and scrape gum off tables and chairs. We do the whole detailed cleaning.”Except for the occasional liquid spillage, class rooms are only cleaned once a day due to all the students being in classes. Bathrooms take up most of the custodians’ time, and are cleaned and stocked 2-3 times a day.Teachers usually tell students to clean up after them selves when the class is over. They don’t have time to pick up after students because they have other classes to get to. Students should pick up after themselves “Why should I be responsible for other people’s trash?” Pat Cornely “Most students are really good stewards, but for others students, I’m curious why.”As for other students they possibly don’t care. “I know they should care”, says De Anza student, Jimmy Cargan,” but they only care about what they have to do.” “Some people care, others not so much.” says De Anza student Steven ClineSo to all the people attending De Anza, do your part and just throw your trash in the can.
