Wednesday Feb. 1 the Writingand Reading Center celebratedLangston Hughes’ birthday. “Thisis a great way to kick off blackhistory month,” said Ken Wisener.
He introduced Bob Dickersonas Master of Ceremonies, “specialthanks…for initiating these crazybirthday parties.”
Students filed into the WRCto the performance of Bob Harrington’sjazz improv. class.
The center was so full peoplewere forced to find alternate seating,filling the floor and standingoff in the drop-in tutor center.
“You’ll hear about the southand also a place called Harlem,”said Dickerson, also known as”Johnny Depp.” He presentedvarious students and facultymembers who read their favoriteHughes poems.
After about 45 minutes ofreading there was a brief interludeof music as volunteers passed outchocolate birthday cake to millingstudents.
“The event is going extraordinarilywell. What a turn out,” saidDickerson. “Having a jazz groupis perfect for Langston Hughesand so rare here on campus.”
“It’s a good event, huh?” saidWisener.
