Although Tony Suen has been a full time student at De Anza for only three quarters, his knowledge of student government laws and guidelines is extensive. In High School, Suen was the President of the Student Government and since then, has been actively involved with the De Anza Student Body Senate by becoming a Senator last Fall, attending all the meetings and actively participating in the organization of programs and activities. This has given Suen a lot of experience in Student Government procedure and facilitation and qualified him to know what changes would be advantageous to De Anza. “I would like to work on student and faculty interaction” Suen said “I think that students should be able to communicate more directly with the Senate and be able to voice their opinions about changes they would like to see.” Suen plans to increase student awareness about programs held at De Anza and policy changes like the plus minus grading system through flyers, posts on campus, and other forms of marketing. He also plans on advertising open forums which students would be able to attend and participate in deciding De Anza’s major and minor policy changes. Suen also hopes to focus the Senate itself “I think there should always be chemistry within the Senate, it should be a place where everybody who participates works eifficiently together” Suen said. Suen plans to focus on developing more positive contributions of the DASB Senate to the school. With dreams to pursue a career in Politics and Communications, Suen first discovered his enthusiasm for the subject from a Politics class in De Anza. Enrolled in courses since High School, he is passionate about the college and his fellow classmates. “Tony is always willing to help out; whenever somebody comes to the Senate asking for money or support for a program, he goes an extra mile to help them in any way he can” said David White, a DASB Senator who is running for Vice Presidnet of Budget and Finance in the elections. Suen sees the Senate less as an administrative authority and more as a possibility for the students to be able to make the changes they would like to see in De Anza. “I feel really comfortable talking to other students, and I would like for them to feel the same way about me. I want them to know that if they want something they can turn to the Senate and I’ll try to help them. I don’t think I’m superior to anyone.” Suen said. He is actively involved in fostering personal relationships with students and finding out their needs.
