Summer camps available for soccer and volleyball

Volleyball

Led by Dawnis Guevara, head coach of De Anza women’s volleyball team , volleyball camp will be held in two sessions.

The first will start on July 22 and the second will start on July 29.

The camp has a structure that is a bit different from similar camps.

Participants are divided according to their skill set instead of the more common method of grouping campers according to age.

The camp will be held at the De Anza Gymnasium and will accommodate beginning, intermediate and advanced players from ages 10 and up.

The volleyball camp acts as an important fundraiser for the college’s team for that sport.

“The camps that we run in the summer are the primary fundraisers for our team,” Guevara said.

“By doing these camps, it allows the volleyball team to do traveling to play against other teams in the area.

According to Guevara, participants in her camps have turned out to be future players at De Anza.

“They want to get better before their school season starts,” said Guevara. “And it makes the transition to De Anza easier.”

Soccer

Designed for players between the ages of 5 to 13, the soccer camp takes place from August 5 to 9, on De Anza’s soccer field.

The camp’s coach will be Cheryl Owiesny, head coach of women’s soccer. The camp runs from 9 a.m. to noon.

Flyers for the camp promise an 8:1 coach to player ratio, as well as a mix of group and individual instruction.

“We start off with ball skills, technical issues, tactical stuff and play games,” Owiesney said.

“The emphasis is to have fun and teach. “For most, it might be their last activity of the summer before school starts again.”
