The De Anza Dons football team played a neck-and-neck game against the City College of San Francisco Rams, which resulted in a 46-31 loss.
The match between the two teams was the first played on the new football field, and was the first home game of the school year. It was also the first of the Nor Cal conference games for De Anza.
CCSF took the lead during the first quarter, with De Anza trailing 17-14.
Hopes faded fast when CCSF scored another three points, at the eight minute mark to the second quarter, making the score 17 – 7.
Yet after halftime, De Anza turned things around taking the offense and dominating SF’s defense tactics. The crowd cheered the Dons on, as they began to take control of the field.
De Anza then took the lead, with a score of 32 – 31 with a field goal.
It wasn’t until the very last quarter that CCSF retook the field and slowly started to take back control of the game.
The Rams managed to pass the ball all the way to the 30-yard line after the kickoff, and De Anza’s defense blocked well, managing to keep possession of the ball at the 30 line for two plays.
CCSF slowly inched towards the end zone, getting the ball to the 20-yard line, wearing down De Anza’s defenses and eventually reaching the end zone, resulting in a field goal with kicker making a 50-yard attempt.
De Anza took possession of the ball, making it to the 10-yard line. This resulted in De Anza scoring a field goal.
De Anza took defense on the last play, with SF carrying the ball all the way to the 20-yard line after a couple of effort-filled blocks by the defense, and eventually SF made it all the way to the 10-yard line before the whistle sounded and teh game was over.
This was De Anza’s second loss of the season.
Although the Dons did not walk away with a victory, the team played with an effort that was seen by the crowd. It left dean of Physical Education Department, Coleen Lee-Wheat saying, “that was a great game.”
When asked about how the team played Lee said, “Wonderful. It was a competitive game. We were ranked 22 in the nation and they were ranked Number 1. We gave them a run for their money.”
Offensive coordinator coach Tony Santos said that De Anza played a game that was “really competitive” and praised the playing of quarterback Josh McCain, saying that McCain “played a great game.”
In the end, tight end Jonathan Cabral, said something that many members of the crowd would whole-heartedly agree with: “We did awesome, we did an amazing job.”
