More money for student success center

The DASB Senate allotted $4,500 to De Anza College’s Student Success and Retention Services Center during its May 8 meeting.

Patricia Burgos, the counselor and director of the center made an official request for the specific amount dedicated to funding student payroll.

Currently, six students hold positions as mentors, event coordinators and math, English and sociology tutors.

The center provides supporting academic enrichments and dedicated services for De Anza students with historically low retention, transfer rates and first-generation college students, according to the office’s website.

Participants receive personal counseling, mentoring, scholarships and financial aid information.

Burgos said during the presentation, “We would hate to lose them because they are so crucial part of our program.”

In other business, Ramsey Ghamrawi, chairman of diversity and events, told the senate there were missing items from DASB Canned Food Drive.

Ghamrawi said it was very unfortunate and discomforting since this event was for the people who can’t afford the bare necessities.
