Started by the De Anza Student Body Senate’s Environmental Sustainability committee, the Bike program’s goal is to give student steady transport to their classes. It also should alleviate students’ worries about increasing gas costs and give them a workout.
The success of the program was “thrilling,” chair of the Environmental Sustainability committee Anaruth Hernandez said.
She was surprised by the popularity of the program considering there was no print advertising and information about it was spread by word of mouth among students.
“We had 10 bikes, and they are all gone,” Hernandez said. “And we still keep getting applications for them. It shows the student demand.”
Sri Paruchuri, another member of the senate, also expressed satisfaction with the program.
‘We’re excited to be assisting students with what they need,” he said. “This was the Environmental Sustainability committee’s first major project, and it’s a huge success.”
Hernandez and Paruchuri said that even though all 10 rental bikes are taken, they still want interested students to submit applications.
“The more applications we get, the more bikes we can get for students in the coming quarters,” Hernandez said.
Submitting an application is easy, they said. Applications are available in the senate office downstairs from the cafeteria, or online from the DASB senate’s home page. To be eligible for the program, students need to be enrolled in six units.
