Marvel recently released “Venom,” on Oct. 5 featuring Tom Hardy as both Eddie Brock and Venom. The story is quite compelling, but the execution is missing something to make the movie great. It feels uneven, and the tone of the movie is all over the place. It goes from comedy that falls flat, into action which feels rushed without excitement.

Eddie’s life as a character represents a generic story; a loving relationship, successful career and ideal living arrangements.

While trying to better the world in his work as an investigative reporter, Eddie makes decisions causing him to lose a loving relationship, successful career and ideal living arrangements. A story of a good guy hitting a stroke of bad luck and spending the rest of the movie trying to make everything right.

After a slow start to the film, things begin to pick up when Venom makes his appearance, slightly adding to the entertainment, refusing to act in the same manner as his host.

Hardy’s performance as both Eddie and Venom is what makes this movie amusing, giving the film a sense of enigma. The relationship and banter between the two brought out a few laughs several times.

Hardy is very convincing as Eddie, a sensitive person who feels the world is against him. We also can feel his desperation and panic when he starts to realize what is happening to him, adding emotional depth to the film.

Venom also goes through an interesting character development and turns out to be a very likable character, even though he has the bad habit of eating people.

The performances by the rest of the actors were average, and no one really stood out. Riz Ahmed does a good job as Carlton Drake, but it would’ve been nice to have seen him give the character more depth.

It is was overall entertaining, and an okay origin movie for this anti-hero, but it didn’t have that wow factor. It did, however, make me curious about what the future holds, and in which direction they are going to take future Venom movies, if any at all.
