Volunteers passed cherry macarons and Thai boba tea to a line of eager students. Once seated, they were given strips of colorful paper and a manual. The projector played a video.
The UNICEF club and Pre-Nursing Society hosted a bracelet-making event for children in need. The event attracted a diverse student body by providing free boba and macarons for students. Nursing students and those alike gathered in the Student Council Chambers on Feb. 5.
Students learned how to make paper stars through a tutorial video and printed instructions. Students came along with friends, chatted over tea and took pictures with their crafts. Club officers took up various responsibilities — distributing boba and the macarons, passing out craft materials, resolving conflicts and more.
Around 40 students attended in total across both clubs.
“One of our amazing officers suggested we collaborate with them as she’s close friends with their (UNICEF) president,” said Maayan Pendler, president of the De Anza Pre-Nursing Society. “Our event ran a little short as some people were not able to completely finish their bracelets, but I think we still had a great time and still had a lot of stuff to donate.”
Jaimee Rose Andaya, 19, pre-nursing major, said that the clubs combined their interests and positively impacted their community.
“What I enjoyed most about the event was meeting new people and making bracelets together for children,” Andaya said. “I think such events are crucial because they bring people together for a good cause, helping build a sense of community.”
