Trails to check out around De Anza: Mission Peak

Yousif Kassab

I’m not sure if anyone’s made a list of the rites of passage afforded to the average person growing up in the bay area, but if they did Mission Peak would be at the top.

The oft-scribbled on, oddly shaped marker at the summit of the hike has become an emblem of young adulthood and independence for kids in surrounding areas.

Right around six miles round trip, the trail is frequented by responsible people of all ages looking to stay in shape.

Unfortunately, the average kid wandering up the trail looking for a good time or new experience might embark on the journey unprepared.

Most importantly, bring a ton of water. It wouldn’t even be out of the question to bring a granola bar or two.

Only slightly less important is the need for comfortable shoes. This is hard to mess up; any comfy sneakers or running shoes will work perfectly.

One challenge that comes with the hike that may be less than obvious is just how taxing getting back down is. After finishing the relatively steep three-mile climb, you face the daunting task of walking back down.

Anyone would be hard pressed to find someone who hasn’t at least engaged in plans to see the sunrise at the mountain’s highest point. If you’re one of those people who has still never taken the challenge, consider this your invitation. It’s worth it.

Mission Peak trail can be found at 1880 Stanford Ave. in Fremont, and is open 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
